President Donald Trump on Tuesday vowed that his administration would denaturalize foreign-born Somali citizens if they were convicted of fraud.“We’re also going to revoke the citizenship of any naturalized immigrant from Somalia convicted of defrauding our citizens. We’re gonna them the hell out of here fast,” he said during an event in Detroit, Mich.
The Department of Homeland Security previously announced plans to end temporary protected status (TPS) for Somalis in the United States.
Trump made the remarks amid an ongoing fraud scandal linked to the Somali expat community based in Minneapolis, Minn. Viral reporting from independent journalist Nick Shirly highlighted the prominence of allegedly fake daycare centers in the city that appeared to be scams to secure public funds.
The scandal has attracted national attention and prompted Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., to end his bid for a third term.
