House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan announced Monday night that former special counsel Jack Smith will publicly testify to the committee later this month. The testimony will take place on Thursday, January 22, at 10 a.m. Eastern. The testimony comes after Smith sat for a closed-door deposition last month in connection with his probe into President Donald Trump’s handling of classified materials and his efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential election.
Republicans have long criticized Smith’s case, asserting it was politically motivated. Some have contrasted the Smith case with that of special counsel Robert Hur, who criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of classified materials, but never brought charges.
