Minnesota sues Trump admin over ICE operations

Minnesota officials sued the Trump administration Monday in hopes of ending widespread federal immigration operations in the state, arguing the operations amount to a “federal invasion of the Twin Cities.” The lawsuit asks for a temporary restraining order to halt the enforcement action or limit the operation, arguing that the federal government is unlawfully commandeering state resources and violating Minnesota law and city ordinances, according to CNN.
“This has to stop; it just has to stop,” said Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison at the Monday news conference announcing the lawsuit.
The move comes as the Department of Homeland Security sends more resources to help crack down on illegal Somali migrants in Minneapolis. Another 100 Customs and Border Protection agents were deployed to the city over the weekend.
“DHS law enforcement have made over 2,000 arrests since Operation Metro Surge began,” Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told the outlet.
The lawsuit comes as tensions between the federal government and Minnesota are high after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis last week who was allegedly attempting to run an agent over with her car.
