The Pentagon informed Congress this week that the projected cost of the Iran War to American taxpayers has increased to approximately $47.1 billion, up from $43.6 billion in September. The price tag, which comes from the United States Central Command, is the latest estimate as of Oct. 16.
The release comes ahead of the November midterms, where voters have expressed concerns about the rising cost of gas prices, which has been attributed to the conflict.
The Pentagon said the largest cost is replacing munitions, which is costing taxpayers approximately $29 billion, according to the Associated Press. Another $11.9 billion is related to costs of operations, while an additional $6 billion is tied to equipment losses.
The United States Air Force is spending the most in the Middle Eastern conflict, with costs reaching $7.6 billion compared to the Army’s $2 billion. The Navy’s costs were listed at $1.45 billion.
The numbers come as the Trump administration pushes Congress to approve an historic $1.5 trillion military budget proposal, and a $95 billion package that would fund the war.
