A pair of House Democrats plan to introduce legislation to strip Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents of qualified immunity in the wake of a deadly Minneapolis shooting involving an officer.Qualified immunity refers to a legal principle of shielding law enforcement from civil lawsuits unless they violate someone’s constitutional rights. Reps. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., plan to introduce the legislation, The Hill reported.
The move follows the ICE-involved shooting death of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, Minn. The Department of Homeland Security has defended the officer’s actions as self-defense, though Democratic lawmakers have criticized the agent’s conduct.
The bill is not expected to clear the lower chamber, which has a Republican majority.
