President Donald Trump on Thursday excoriated Republican senators who voted with Democrats to approve a measure requiring congressional authorization for further military action in Venezuela. The Senate approved the plan in a 52-47 vote, though the House has not backed the plan and Trump is sure to veto it should it ever reach his desk. Five Republicans joined Democrats in backing the measure, including Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Todd Young of Indiana.
“Republicans should be ashamed of the Senators that just voted with Democrats in attempting to take away our Powers to fight and defend the United States of America,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, Josh Hawley, and Todd Young should never be elected to office again.”
“This Vote greatly hampers American Self Defense and National Security, impeding the President’s Authority as Commander in Chief,” he added. “In any event, and despite their ‘stupidity,’ the War Powers Act is Unconstitutional, totally violating Article II of the Constitution, as all Presidents, and their Departments of Justice, have determined before me. Nevertheless, a more important Senate Vote will be taking place next week on this very subject.”
The vote followed American special forces extracting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from Caracas and transporting him to New York to stand trial for drug trafficking.
