    OpenAI scrapped the planned release of its next-generation model, GPT-6.1 Astra, over safety concerns raised during internal testing, according to a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report. The model had been scheduled to debut in ChatGPT and Codex in October, the outlet reported.

    The report was circulated in an X post by Leo (@synthwavedd) on Sept. 28, 2026, which included an image of the WSJ headline. OpenAI’s own safety chief later confirmed the company would not proceed with the rollout, saying the model “didn’t quite meet the bar” of the firm’s security standards [1].
