Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman said Wednesday, amid the controversy over Greenland, that “ideally” the United States would purchase Greenland as the way to acquire the massive Arctic territory.“America is not a bully. Ideally, we purchase it—similar to our purchases of Alaska or the Louisiana Purchase,” Fetterman wrote in a statement on the social platform X. “Acquiring Greenland is a many decades old conversation,” he added, according to The Hill.
While making it clear that he does not want to see the military involved, he appears to agree with President Donald Trump. “I believe Greenland has massive strategic benefits for the United States. I do not support taking it by force,” Fetterman continued.
Last year when the issue came up, Fetterman suggested that the U.S. focus on “just buying it out.” “If anyone thinks that’s bonkers, it’s like, well, remember the Louisiana Purchase?” He also referred to the 1867 purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire.
Denmark and Greenland, which is a self-governing territory of Denmark and part of NATO, said they are seeking a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio said Wednesday he is planning to meet next week with Danish officials to discuss the future of Greenland, according to the Associated Press.
