Republicans set off a redistricting bonanza last year after President Donald Trump nudged Texas into redrawing its map to gain up to five seats. The idea was to give the party a leg up in an unfavorable midterm environment. Democrats retaliated in California, and then the GOP got the ball rolling in other states. Virginia almost had a new Democrat-friendly map in place until the state supreme court struck it down, deflating the party’s hopes of leveling the playing field.
As it stands, many strategists still believe the redistricting efforts could net Republicans six to 10 seats. But that outlook ignores the fact that many seats designed to be safe are surprisingly competitive. Now, what was supposed to be a bulwark for their House majority seems to be slipping away.
