At least 24 Venezuelan security officers were killed during the U.S. military’s capture  this past weekend of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, officials said Tuesday.Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab said overall “dozens” of officials and civilians were killed in the military operation and that prosecutors would investigate the deaths in what he called a “war crime,” according to the Associated Press.
The Venezuelan military wrote in an Instagram post on Tuesday, “Their spilled blood does not cry out for vengeance, but for justice and strength. It reaffirms our unwavering oath not to rest until we rescue our legitimate President, completely dismantle the terrorist groups operating from abroad, and ensure that events such as these never again sully our sovereign soil.”
On Sunday, Cuba’s government announced that 32 Cuban military and police officers working in Venezuela had died in the operation.
Over the weekend, the U.S. military captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, bringing them to New York City to face federal conspiracy, drugs, and weapons charges. They both pleaded not guilty to all the charges on Monday.
