Singapore is weighing the use of chemical castration for sex offenders following a reported rise in molestation cases, according to statements made in parliament this week. Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam confirmed that the government is open to using anti-androgen drugs, commonly known as chemical castration, if clear evidence emerges that they can reduce crime rates.
Police recorded 1,531 molestation cases in 2025, up 7.3% from 1,427 the previous year. Minister Shanmugam said on Tuesday that “so far, the evidence is not conclusive on that,” referring to the effectiveness of anti-androgen drugs in reducing recidivism. The drugs work by suppressing testosterone production and reducing sexual desire, representing a less invasive alternative to surgical castration. [1]
