President Donald Trump this week confirmed that construction of a triumphal arch near the Lincoln Memorial would begin this year.Trump, in October, announced plans to build an archway over the D.C. end of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, saying “It’s going to be really beautiful. I think it’s going to be fantastic.”
Speaking to Politico, Trump told the outlet that the construction would begin “sometime in the next two months.” The arch is expected to resemble the French Arc de Triomph in Paris.
Triumphal arches have a long history in western architecture, with the Romans often erecting them as monuments to a military victory.
Notable examples include the Arch of Titus in Rome, commemorating the defeat of Jewish rebels, and the Arch of Constantine, which commemorates the emperor’s victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge.
Trump has not indicated whether the monument will honor anything in particular as of yet.
