The Justice Department is still reviewing 5.2 million documents as part of an expanded review of materials related to the case of Jeffrey Epstein, the wealthy financier and convicted sex offender who associated with some of the world’s most powerful men before his 2019 suicide. The expanded document review was reported Wednesday by the Associated Press, based on information from a person briefed on a related letter sent to U.S. attorneys.
The figure is the latest estimate in the expanding review of case files on Epstein and longtime girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell. The department is already a week beyond the legal deadline set by Congress to turn over all of the documents. The department has over 400 attorneys assigned to the review but does not expect to release more documents until Jan. 20 or 21, the wire service also reports.
The size and scope of the documents suggest the case on Epstein, who was associated with such men as Prince Andrew, former President Clinton and President Trump, will remain a significant issue for Congress and the White House at least until late 2026.
