A review published May 12, 2026, in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that aerobic exercise, a combination of aerobic and strength training, and high-intensity interval training each lowered systolic blood pressure by an average of 5 to 6 points in adults with hypertension. The review included 31 separate trials with a total of 1,345 participants and measured blood pressure using 24-hour ambulatory monitoring, a method that tracks readings every 15 to 30 minutes over a full day. This approach provides a more accurate prediction of heart-related risks than office readings, the study authors stated.
The pooled results compared these three exercise patterns to no exercise or other activities and showed consistent reductions across all three regimens. The findings are based on a meta-analysis of randomized trials lasting at least four weeks. Previous research, including a 2023 meta-analysis published in the same journal, also found exercise interventions effective for blood pressure reduction. [1]
