    New Imaging Study Shows Psilocybin Alters Brain Communication Patterns, Researchers Say

    Psilocybin, the psychoactive compound in so-called magic mushrooms, temporarily alters the way the brain communicates by increasing neural signal diversity, according to research summaries from multiple investigators. A study from Imperial College London, reported in 2017, found that psilocybin could “reboot” the brain and relieve symptoms of depression in patients who had not responded to traditional antidepressants [1]. Investigators have described this effect as a temporary increase in brain entropy, meaning the brain produces more varied and less predictable electrical signals [2]. The findings have renewed interest in the potential therapeutic use of psychedelic compounds.
