A recently released online video has sparked intense criticism of Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz, as political figures and commentators question how millions in public funds have been allocated to daycare programs in the state that appear to not have children present. The nearly 45-minute video, uploaded by independent reporter Nick Shirley to platforms including X and YouTube, shows in-person visits to several licensed childcare centers in Minneapolis.
One of the standout scenes is at a facility on Nicollet Avenue whose sign famously misspells “learning” as “Learing.” Despite official records indicating the center is supposed to serve nearly 100 children, Shirley’s footage shows no children or visible activity at the location, yet it has received millions of dollars in state support.
The post quickly caught fire online and drew a sharp political reaction. Republican leaders, including New York Rep. Mike Lawler, called for Walz to explain the funding decisions and be held responsible.
“Folks need to be arrested and prosecuted and the Governor of Minnesota needs to be held accountable,” Lawler posted to X on Saturday. “Congress should hold a hearing immediately and start getting answers.”
Prominent conservative voices amplified the video and overall debate over the fraud in Minnesota on social media. Vice President JD Vance described the situation as emblematic of broader issues with government programs, while public figures like Elon Musk warned of systemic exploitation of welfare resources for political gain. Some critics also linked the controversy to longstanding allegations of widespread fraud within Minnesota’s social services system.
Walz and his office have not yet publicly responded to the mounting criticism.
