Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., was projected to lose his primary to a progressive challenger backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday evening. The Associated Press called the race for Darializa Avila Chevalier at 10:40 p.m., with 87% of precincts reporting. As of press time, Chevalier led with 49.4% to Espaillat’s 45.9%.
Espaillat is the leader of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and generally regarded as a progressive lawmaker, though Chevalier ran to his left.
The race was an early measure of Mamdani’s growing influence in the Democratic Party. He also backed former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander in his successful bid to oust Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y.
