South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson decidedly won the Republican primary runoff for governor on Tuesday evening. The Associated Press called the race for Wilson at 7:27 p.m., with 7% of precincts reporting. As of press time, Wilson held 66.7% of the vote to Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette’s 33.3%.
The contest is widely regarded as safely Republican in the general election.
Both candidates advanced to the runoff after the first round, which took place earlier this month. That contest eliminated Reps. Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, as well as Rom Reddy.
Evette placed first in the first round after receiving the endorsement of President Donald Trump. But Wilson surged ahead in runoff polling, prompting Trump to issue a rare double endorsement of both candidates.
Wilson is the son of Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C.
