Senate blocks latest Iran War Powers resolution as Trump attempts to secure peace

The Senate on Tuesday blocked the latest Democratic-led Iran War Powers resolution, which attempted to force an end to the conflict in the Middle East even as President Donald Trump attempts to do so through a memorandum of understanding. The president announced Sunday that the United States and Iran have reached a peace deal that was signed electronically that day and will be signed physically in a formal ceremony on Friday.
The Senate failed to advance the resolution in a 47-48 split that saw four Republicans join all Democrats in voting in favor of the resolution except for Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman. Republican Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rand Paul of Kentucky broke ranks to support the legislation.
Senators from both parties have called for a briefing on the memorandum of understanding, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stating Monday that Americans have been disappointed by reports of a looming peace deal with Iran in the past.
“The American people deserve details and full transparency – what exactly is in this ‘understanding’? Will servicemembers remain in harm’s way?” Schumer said in a statement. “Trump must release the details publicly, brief Congress immediately, and end this war for good.”
The vote also comes after the House voted to limit Trump’s military authority in Iran earlier this month, by making the U.S. withdraw troops from the hostilities with Iran.
