Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra secured Friday night the first of two slots for California gubernatorial candidates to advance to the November general election, according to the Associated Press. The AP called the first slot for Becerra, who secured 26.7% of the vote as of publishing time, compared to Republican Steve Hilton, who is trailing in second with 26.4% of the vote and 66% of the total ballots counted.
Although Hilton and Becerra have been neck-and-neck since Tuesday, the AP has not given Hilton the second slot. California Democratic Rep. Tom Steyer is currently in third with 21% of the vote, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is in fourth with 10.8%.
Beccerra has pitched himself to California voters as an experienced choice to become the state’s governor next year, highlighting his decades-long career in public service. He previously served as a U.S. Representative for more than two decades, as health secretary under former President Joe Biden and state attorney general.
“I am ready to lead the fight to uphold California’s promise to make sure we have the governance worthy of our gifts,” he said on election night.
Several candidates have conceded the race, including former Democratic Rep. Katie Porter and San Jose Democratic Mayor Matt Mahan, according to ABC-7.
