The House of Representatives passed a legislative package Thursday night that authorizes funding for more military aid to Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. The package was passed in a 226-95 split, which saw 18 House Republicans and Independent California Rep. Kevin Kiley vote with Democrats on the measure. Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar was the sole Democrat to oppose it.
New York Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks brought the package to the floor through a discharge petition, which gained enough signatures last month, according to The Hill.
“We all want this war to end. The question is, how?” Meeks said on the House floor before urging his colleagues to support “the brave Ukrainians fighting for their future, deliver them the weapons that they need to defend themselves, impose costs on the Kremlin for this immoral conflict, and hold Russia accountable for its war crimes.”
The vote comes after House Democrats attempted to get the discharge petition over its final hurdle for nearly a year. Kiley delivered the final signature, along with GOP Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, of Pennsylvania, and Don Bacon, of Nebraska.
