Amazon dethroned Walmart as the top company on the Fortune 500 list published Wednesday, ending the mega retailer’s 13-year reign. The list is an annual ranking of America’s biggest companies by revenue based on the previous fiscal year. Amazon took the top spot by generating roughly $717 billion in revenue in the 2025 fiscal year, narrowly surpassing Walmart’s $713 billion.
The other three companies rounding out the top five were UnitedHealth Group, which garnered $448 billion in revenue, Apple garnered $416 billion in revenue and Google’s parent company Alphabet generated a total of $403 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2025.
Amazon’s rise to the top was fueled by the rapid growth it experienced across its sprawling business lines, including e-commerce, cloud computing, advertising and third-party seller services, according to the New York Post. Although Walmart remains the most successful in U.S. store-led retailing, Amazon’s wider range of services helped it pull ahead in total revenue.
The move marks the first time Walmart has not sat at the top of the Fortune 500 list since 2013.
