President Donald Trump this week nominated Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez to serve as ambassador to Brazil. The White House announced the nomination in a posting of several federal nominees, which largely included executive agency appointments at the DOJ, State Department, and others.
Perez has been an adversary of Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., with whom he has feuded over budgetary and legislative matters. Perez is term-limited, Politico reported.
Under the Trump administration, the White House has worked to reshape its relationships with key partners in South America and to prevent foreign adversaries from gaining a foothold in the Western Hemisphere.
Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have often been at loggerheads, with Trump regularly intervening to criticize the country’s handling of its criminal prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
