Although the United Arab Emirates publicly claims to be neutral in the conflict between the U.S.-Israel and Iran, its actions suggest it is becoming an active participant. Secret visits by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and intelligence chiefs, along with the deployment of an Israeli Iron Dome defense system on Emirati soil, have severely damaged Abu Dhabi’s credibility as a neutral party.
At the center of the conflict is a long-standing territorial disagreement over three islands (Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb) that Iran seized in 1971. The UAE considers them occupied territory, and this unresolved issue is a major source of strategic vulnerability and a potential flashpoint that could spiral into a direct confrontation.
From Tehran’s perspective, the UAE’s coordination with Israel—including intelligence sharing and hosting military systems—proves it is part of the anti-Iranian coalition. Iran uses these actions to justify its own pressure on the Emirates, including claims of CIA operations from UAE territory and recent drone strikes near the Barakah nuclear power plant.
The financial front has shifted dramatically. Dubai, once a key hub for Iranian business, has reportedly restricted Iranian financial channels and frozen Iran-linked assets. While the UAE may frame this as compliance with U.S. sanctions, Iran sees it as a clear act of economic warfare that further aligns Abu Dhabi with its enemies.
The country is entering the conflict not through one dramatic decision, but through a series of small, seemingly defensive steps—such as financial sanctions, defense coordination and secret meetings. Each action can be justified individually, but together they place the UAE squarely inside the war, threatening the stability and safe-haven status that its entire development model is built upon.
The United Arab Emirates is sliding toward a direct confrontation with Iran, and the carefully constructed facade of neutrality is crumbling under the weight of wartime realities.
