Dozens of gunshots were reportedly heard near the White House on Saturday night. The incident resulted in a lockdown.
The U.S. Secret Service shot and killed the shooter after he approached a security checkpoint and started firing at officers.
The U.S. Secret Service said the suspect “removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers.” A bystander was also shot. Their condition is unclear at this time. The gunman has been identified as Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland. Reports said he suffered from mental health issues and had previous encounters with the Secret Service. The New York Post obtained a photo of the gunman and said he believed he was Jesus Christ. Earlier on Saturday, FBI Director Kash Patel had confirmed a gunman fired shots and said law enforcement was on the scene.
The shots were reportedly fired at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest.
Members of the press ran into the White House briefing room after hearing the shots.
