    Many common beauty products contain controversial ingredients that may pose potential health or environmental risks, but consumers can reduce exposure by learning to read labels and choose safer alternatives.
    Several widely used chemicals, including parabens, phthalates, triclosan and oxybenzone, are linked to hormone disruption, irritation or other health concerns, prompting some countries and manufacturers to restrict or phase them out.
    Certain ingredients used for acne treatment, skin lightening and hair coloring, such as benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone and resorcinol, may cause irritation or raise safety questions, especially with long-term use.
    Petroleum derivatives, methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and synthetic dyes have also raised concerns ranging from possible contamination and allergic reactions to environmental harm.
